There's something evocative about an SP-badged Ducati. In the late '80s and through the '90s they were money-no-object homologation specials built to go World Superbike racing. Blood red icons like the 888 SP series, or the 916 SP and its derivatives were the stuff of motorcycling dreams. It's been a badge of honour for the chosen ones ever since, with the odd 'R' thrown in for good measure along the way. Now it's the fourth-gen Monster's turn to get the SP treatment. With its firmer suspension, sportier riding position, stronger brakes and reduced weight the Monster's character transforms from mild-mannered roadster to something approaching Hypermotard levels of lunacy. Yamaha's MT-10 was Japan's first proper super naked and still is. The Tiger 900 is all-new, from the front wheel to the back, and from the screen (in any of its five, easy to adjust positions) downward. The old 800 was a great bike, but the development team started with a blank sheet. Twin radiators allow the engine to be moved forward, and a smaller sump allows the crankshaft to be lower in the frame. So, you get more ground clearance, but a lower centre of gravity and the weight bias moves forward slightly. All of this results in greater low speed agility, better high-speed stability and no loss of ground clearance. The mid-capacity adventure sector is crowded, but this is probably the best bike of the bunch. The adventure market loves a gadget, and the Tigers come with an impressive level of equipment. Move beyond the base model and you get multiple modes, heated grips, cruise control, cornering ABS and traction control and big TFT instruments. Invest in this Pro version of the Rally and you get heated seats, quickshifter, Bluetooth, tyre pressure monitoring, centre stand and fog lights. The Triumph Speed Twin (formerly known as the Street Twin) is shorter, sportier and better equipped from 2025, giving it a livelier feel that extends its sporting capabilities but doesn't compromise its kerb appeal or novice friendliness: if anything, the revised running gear makes it better in most scenarios. A shorter wheelbase, new suspension, wheels and brakes are the top mechanical changes, while every body part has changed on some level, without straying too far from its Bonneville origins. Like the preceding Explorer adventure bike, the Triumph Trophy tourer swept to the top of its class first time out by, if not being shiningly the best at anything, then certainly being the best tourer overall. The second generation Triumph Tiger carried on the theme of the original – a big, bruising road trail motorcycle powered by Hinckley's distinctive triple.
